These New Insights Make Regular Checkups All the More Important
Researchers have long explored the connection between hearing and cognitive health. For example, hearing loss is associated with increased dementia risk, raising an important question: Could addressing hearing loss also help support brain health?
A major randomized trial — the groundbreaking ACHIEVE Study — previously found slower cognitive decline over three years among older adults at higher risk of decline. Now, a large international study published in 2026 adds another piece to the picture.
A Closer Look at Hearing Aid Effectiveness
Published in Cell Reports Medicine, the newer study pooled data from 61,089 adults ages 55 and older with hearing loss across 33 countries. Researchers followed participants for an average 6.5 years, examining hearing aid use, reported hearing improvement, and probable dementia.
Overall, hearing aid use was associated with about a 9% lower risk of probable dementia during follow-up. The difference was greater when researchers considered how much users said their hearing aids helped.
- Those reporting good hearing improvement had about a 14% lower risk of probable dementia than nonusers.
- Those reporting poor hearing improvement did not show a statistically significant reduction in risk.
Why the Findings Matter
The study suggests that what matters is not simply using hearing aids, but how much they improve hearing. Participants who reported good hearing improvement with their devices had a lower observable risk of probable dementia, while those reporting little improvement did not.
Investigators noted that successful hearing rehabilitation may involve appropriate fitting and programming, attention to communication needs, counseling, communication strategies, and other support.
What the Study Can’t Tell Us
The findings are encouraging, but they don’t prove that effective hearing aid use prevents dementia. Because this was an observational study, other health, lifestyle, socioeconomic, or care-related factors may have influenced the results.
Hearing-aid effectiveness was also based on participants’ reported hearing improvement, not objective measures. Still, the exciting findings add to growing evidence that effective hearing care may help support cognitive health as people age.
Commonly Asked Questions
How are hearing and brain health connected? Hearing relies on the brain to process and interpret sound. Healthy hearing supports communication, social connection, and engagement in conversations and activities that help keep the brain active.
Does hearing loss cause dementia?
Hearing loss is associated with a higher risk of dementia, but causation isn’t yet conclusive. Researchers continue to study how hearing and cognitive health may be connected.
Can hearing aids prevent dementia?
Prevention hasn’t been proven. However a Lancet Commission report released in 2024 identified hearing loss as a potentially modifiable dementia risk factor, supporting hearing care as part of healthy aging, and hearing-aid use in certain populations has been tied to lower dementia risk.
Why is addressing hearing loss important?
Better access to sound can make communication easier and help you stay connected to conversations, relationships, and activities. It can also reduce everyday challenges — such as frustration, misunderstandings, increased risk of falls — associated with untreated hearing loss.
Healthy hearing is an important part of healthy aging. If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, a comprehensive evaluation is a smart place to start. Contact us to book your personalized appointment today.
